Movement self-portrait

This project has been very much about me. About my interest, my point of view and my movement.
As its come to an end i wanted to do a self-portrait to sum this up.

Streaming Lights

Doing the first photo shoot was a good experience and even though i was happy with the results i felt like i could definitely improve on the long exposure light shoots. So with this in mind i picked a better location and did another shoot. this time instead of spinning or waving my arms i wanted to create an image with perspective.  This time i nailed it.

Ghost images

Iv mentioned marks/traces a few times but never really explained what i mean by that. The marks i'm talking about are left in space through the body are imaginary as such. It's like when fork lightening strikes and for a split second you see it, the shape it makes and the way it traveled to land. Then its gone but the mark it left for that split second remains, like a memory.

An afterimage or a ghost image is an optical illusion that refers to an image in your vision after the exposure to the original image has finished. It's almost as if the image has been burned into the retina.

Using this idea, i wanted to once again go back to photography to create movement images and ghost images.

Combining the two

After turning the old gramophone and drill into drawing machines i figured that i could combine both to create an altogether new drawing machine. So while the turntable rotates one way the drill rotates in an entirely different way creating an unusual patter. Its so clear to see the swirling and turning movement just by viewing the patterns.

How to turn a drill into a drawing machine

Step 1- Get you hands on an electric drill, such as the one pictured below.

Step 2- Remove drill bit from drill. You wont be needing that.

Step 3- Grab some colourful markers, about 8 should do it.

Step 4- Attach markers to the circumference of the drill nozzle. be sure to attach it only to the part of the nozzle that moves.

Volia! now you have your very own drill drawing machine. And can create images such as...

Drawing Machines- Gramophone

Last year my dad found his old gramophone in the attic from when he was a child, along with his record collection. Taking the origonal pieces, the needle the crank, etc he remade it and got it to work again.
When designing and making drawing machines this was one that automatically came to mind. So i replaced the needle with lead and then pen, and replaced the record with paper and turned it into a drawing machine.

Umbrella mobile

One of three mobile 'drawing Machines' i designed and made, the umbrella mobile has a paint brush hanging by string from each of the spokes. Each paintbrush has a different colour so that each spokes movement can b traced. I hung the umbrella in my hall and throughout the day as people came and left the house the wind would spin the umbrella causing it to move. The marks represent not only the movement of the umbrella but of the entire household.

Life drawing

I've been taking the life drawing workshop/classes for the last few weeks in a bid to get better at recording movement through drawing. The model, Isabella, trained as a ballet dancer. I couldn't have asked for a better model. Here is an edited version of some of my life drawing work over the past few weeks.
